Finally started the work on my MY96 STi RA. I bought the car a couple of months ago, traveled two hundred odd miles by train then drove back. Car was fine all the way home and didn't miss a beat for the first couple off weeks. It needs some body repair to the boot/rear inner wing and a few other bits here and there to bring it back to original condition. Then the rad cap started lifting slightly. I took a look at the cap it seem fairly old so I bought a genuine 1.3 bar cap and fitted it. All was now fine until I saw a small leak coming from the turbo coolant feed pipe. Sorted this and went for a drive, just pulled up to stop and noticed a massive growing puddle underneath the car. Bottom radiator hose had burst open. :( Head gasket failure the most likely caused. So now I've taken the engine out at a mates garage and the process of stripping and rebuild has begun. Any comments/advice very welcome :) 20160419_075418.jpg

Next stage is the splitting the block down but I'm going to give everything a good clean up first. I've removed the valve pushers and shims from the heads and tapped them all together on a piece of card so they don't get mixed up. I'm going to send the heads to a specialist for checking / skimming.

Quick update and a few questions, will upload pics soon. I've clean up the heads, both are stamped UK but the cars import, does this suggest it's had replacement heads at some point? I've removed pistons 1 and 2 so far, they are made by wiesco, I've not been able to find a supplier of new rings so far, does anyone have any ideas? Also it looks as though the heads will need a skim, is it worth getting the valves re-cut and lapped and is re-shimming the ball ache it seems?

The coil mounting holes are a squarish shape which suggests they are early type and correct for the age of the engine, are they shim and bucket or Hydraulic lifters? I'm not sure what type your car should have. The markings of the camshafts offer some information
A shed engineering method of checking valve seats is to pour a liquid like white spirit in the inlets or on the flame face and see if they leak. You might get away with lapping the valves but reseating is best practice.

They are shim and bucket. Think I'll try pouring some petrol in the head and see if it leaks through like you suggest. Then again it might be a false economy to do all this work and not re-cut the seat. Got some pics of piston removal.

Found two of the oil jets it the bottom of the sump :/ hopefully they didn't rattle around the crank to much on there way down.

Oil pump removed, I'll replace this along with the modine.

Wiesco piston, currently trying to source replacement rings, the two pistons I've removed seem in good condition along with the bores but some precise measuring to come once I've bought/borrowed an internal micrometer.

Hope you've enjoyed reading so far. Going to pick up a set of standard wheels today. I'm going to carry out a basic suspension overhaul, so hopefully the car will be looking standard and handling perfect by the time the engine is ready to go back in.

From memory we have just sorted another customer with the same ring set and can easily sort oil pumps, etc as on the shelf.....

Update on progress so far, cylinder heads have been pressure tested and skimmed, very little warping 0.1mm (4thou) removed from both head looking lovely and shinny. Block stripped ready for checking and maybe a light skim. Some very light scoring on big end bearings but nothing mayor and no damage found caused by the loose oil jets found in the sump. Had a closer look at the flywheel and its got some light cracking on the surface, with any luck it will machine down without taking to much material off but may need replacing. I've also sent off a shopping list to AS performance. Going to give the engine bay a clean up whilst waiting for parts/machining. Some welding needed under the battery tray and will most likely give the whole thing a light coat of paint.

Another update on progress. Engine blocks are at the machine shop for pressure testing and skimming. Had a quick clean up of the engine bay. Stripped off front wing to inspect the thoughtfully located coolant expansion tank for k-seal/general gunk. More cleaning of the engine bay plus repairs to the battery tray to come. Does anyone know if repair panels are available for classic? Maybe be able to save whats there but looks a tricky panel to make from scratch.
